Pilsner beers are the most common beers in Germany. However, as any German would tell you, beers in Germany are a lot like wines – they vary from region to region. Just as the accents vary widely between even only a few kilometers distance! One can therefore not expect a Northern style, dry, bitter, highly carbonated pilsner to be the same as a more malty, fuller body Southern style Pilsner! The devil is always in the details, especially with German Pilsners!

DUNKELWEIZEN
PILSNER
Hefeweizen (Wheat Ales) technically DO NOT adhere to the Reinheitsgebot (beer purity law) of 1516, due to the fact that there is wheat in the recipe. This was excluded back then but exceptions were made to that law in Bavaria. Hence the wide distribution there (more so than in Northern Germany).
The beer itself is golden and hazy, has a definite Banana and wheat grass aroma and a long lasting (if the glass is properly washed), fluffy white head on top. The taste is banana sweetness up front, balanced with clove notes at the back end with a drying sensation. This is due to the relatively low residual sugars in this beer, which is masked by the fruity flavors and the clove spice. There is no hops aroma or taste present in this beer, other than a slight floral and spice (pepper) note.
Medium body, banana upfront followed by a gentle clove spicyness. Golden and hazy

Dunkelweizen, much like the Hefeweizen (Wheat Ales) technically DO NOT adhere to the Reinheitsgebot (beer purity law) of 1516, due to the fact that there is wheat in the recipe. This was excluded back then but exceptions were made to that law in Bavaria. Hence the wide distribution there (more so than in Northern Germany).
Different to the Fahr Away Hefeweizen, this Dunkelweizen is almost black and hazy, has a definite Banana and chocolate aroma and a long lasting (if the glass is properly washed), fluffy off-white head on top. The taste is banana sweetness and slight roast chocolate up front, balanced with more pronounced clove notes at the back end with a drying sensation. There is no hops aroma or taste present in this beer, other than a slight floral and spice (pepper) note.
Medium body, banana and chocolate upfront followed by a clove spicyness. Very dark and hazy

Our Fahr Out Pilsner is brewed to the highest purity law standards, applicable in Germany. But we do that here in Turner Valley! To get to the full body, we even go through the really intensive process of decoction mashing. This is a fancy word for taking a part of the steeping malt during the mashing process and boil it! This causes essentially the same effect as browning meat on a stove – this step increases flavor, mouthfeel and a general “umami” flavor – something that is very common in European Pilsners and less common in North American Pilsners. To get to the bitterness and to balance out all that body, we use German Noble hops for both, bittering and aroma. This is where this beer really shines – the initial malty sweetness is balanced very delicately by the hops that take over towards the end with a floral spicy, slightly lingering flavor.
Medium body, brilliantly clear, low to no aroma of crushed malt. Golden and clear

Commonly in North America one sees the Flute, but we actually recommend a tulip shaped glass in order for the delicate aromas to get to your nose! 6 – 8 C drinking temperature, year-round!
